CITY MANAGER APPOINTS
Gary Hobbie, Director of Community and Development Services has announced that City Manager Jason Gage has appointed James (Jim) M. Brown as the Building Official for the City of Salina. Mr. Brown presently works as the Building Official for the City of Prairie Village, Kansas and has been employed as a building official and building inspector by various communities since 1998. Prior to being a building official and building inspector, Mr. Brown worked in the construction industry as a construction superintendent in the Texas region.
Mr. Brown is presently a Certified Building Official, with additional International Code certifications including: LEED Green Associate, Commercial Building Inspector, and Building Inspector. Mr. Brown brings experiences in private building construction, commercial plans review, building inspections, fire safety processes, property maintenance code, and regulatory compliance. Additionally, Mr. Brown is experienced in planning and zoning as well as public life safety and security duties.
Mr. Brown is a member of the International Code Council, Heart of America Building Officials Organization and has served on the Johnson County Contractor Education Committee. Mr. Brown earned a degree from the University of Nebraska, and has attended multiple ICC Code Change Hearings and construction and safety/security related classes.
Over 40 applicants applied for the Building Officials position.
Gary Hobbie states, after much research and effort in finding a key person who will meet our desired outcomes, “Jim presents himself as a well spoken and professional individual who holds the ability to balance private industry needs with municipal code requirements without compromising public life, health and safety matters.” Jim will oversee the building inspection department and assist with commercial plan reviews. He intends to be out in the field talking to construction workers, contractors, design professionals and business owners during his initial days of employment which will officially begin on August 15, 2014 .
